Keep Melbourne Liveable

If we’re not careful, this city could become a carpark. Melbourne is the greatest city in Australia, because of our culture, our gigs, our food, our pubs and our art. We all know that.

But the last few years have been tough for us in Melbourne. We sacrificed so much of what we love about our city to protect our community from covid and now the cost of living crisis is making life harder for everyone. .

But things have been tough for a while. Inequality is rising. Most of us can’t afford to buy a home and renters are getting squeezed out. The fight is on to keep Melbourne liveable. The Greens can lead this fight because unlike Labor and the Liberals, we don’t take donations from big property developers or the big corporations and billionaires.

Urgently build public, community and affordable homes so that everyone has access to an  affordable, accessible and high-quality home. to end homelessness and slash public and social housing waiting lists and provide options for young people seeking affordable, secure, quality homes.

We need stronger protections for renters – including a rent freeze and capped rents, increased renters’ rights, European-style long-term leases and increases to Centrelink Rent Assistance.

The Greens will build homes to sell and rent at affordable rates. We’ll stop the large-scale destruction and privatisation of public housing in Melbourne and increase funding for homelessness support services so that those experiencing homelessness have access to emergency housing.

Live music and the arts need urgent support. Iconic music venues are being crushed by big developers and property investors and the cost of living crisis. The Curtin in Carlton only survived after a huge community campaign to save it.  We’re calling on State and Federal governments to provide urgent financial assistance to save live music, funding to future-proof venues and theatres and ensure iconic venues like The Curtin remain part of the fabric of our great city.

The CBD has been one of the hardest hit areas of Melbourne, after surviving two years of lockdown. We need to rebuild our community, not just our economy. The Greens have a plan to revitalise the CBD and inner-city, with rent reductions for creative and innovative businesses, more affordable housing and long-term funding for arts festivals and organisations.

Our bustling high streets are the social and economic heart of our community, filled with the shops, restaurants and cafes we love. But the cost of living crisis is hitting local traders hard. We’ll be working alongside the community to help revive our local shopping strips.

We’ll keep up the pressure to ensure urgent action to fix deadly flammable cladding.

Growth in Melbourne must be appropriate and planned. I’ve worked with residents to stop inappropriate development.

Increasing noise pollution from large and small aircraft is impacting part of our community. We are fighting hard to force State and Federal governments to get the balance right between the necessity of flights and protecting our community.

For decades, dysfunctional Liberal and Labor governments have failed to plan ahead and meet the demands of our growing city.

Rather than build public transport infrastructure to meet community needs, our city and transport options are being decided by corporations and big toll road companies, whose donations corrupt the policies of the major parties.

Our transport plan for Melbourne prioritises clean, safe, affordable public and active transport.
